About the Department

The Department of Animal Health and Production is one out of the nine component Academic Departments in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Before 2004, it existed as Animal Health and Production Unit in the Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology. However in the year 2004, it attained the status of an independent academic department named the Department of Animal Health and Production. The Department offers courses in General Animal Production, Animal Nutrition in Health, Ruminant and Micro-livestock Production and Health, Swine and Poultry Health and Production as part of the core courses needed to produce graduates of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). She also offers a course titled Animal Production in Health and Diseases to the students of Faculty of Agriculture, University of Nigeria. The Department offers Master of Science (M.Sc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes in Animal Health and Production, as further training for Veterinarians who may want to specialize in the area of Animal Health and Production. As good health and management are vital for profitable animal production, the Department therefore plays a key role in the upbringing of veterinarians, and in the further training of veterinarians wishing to specialize in the area of animal health and production.
